Our First House
Where do I even begin to start?! The excitement of owning a home is completely overwhelming. Overwhelming in the good way (a little scary sometimes because it's such a huge responsibility, but good). In this blog post I'm going to focus more on the story behind the process of finding and buying our home!
The story behind buying our house seriously gives me major goosebumps. Before Stuart and I got married, one of our favorite things to do was drive around town to look at all the cute houses and dream of what we could have someday. We came across this cute little cape cod home with a cute yard, mature trees, and lots of character. Both of us basically drooled over this house (If you know me at all, that's pretty normal, ha). I specifically remember telling Stuart, "That house will never go up for sale." (Yes I regret saying that now of course!)
Months and months go by but one morning, I received a text message from my sweet hubby. It was a message with a picture of that cute cape cod we saw months before, and a link to Zillow. I FREAKED out. I clicked into the link and what do ya know?! It was in our price range and in the city we were dying to live in. Could that have been any better?! (Here's a hint to answer that question: no.).
Without any hesitation, I told him I wanted to go see it and he strongly agreed. Luckily we found the best realtor (aka my sweet momma;) ) and she set up a showing for us that night. She also warned us that there were multiple offers on the house already...but that didn't stop us.
We pulled up into the driveway and it just felt like home to us. I could see us playing catch with our kids in the front yard, having small picnics under that beautiful tree, drawing with chalk on the driveway, teaching them to ride bikes, and creating a place where they can feel safe and happy. I could see us sitting at the kitchen table eating, talking, and laughing as a family. I pictured Stuart reading our kids books and playing with them in that cozy living room. I pictured us having fun summer nights on the deck-telling stories around the fire, sitting under the twinkling string lights, roasting marshmallows, and creating unforgettable memories. I pictured endless things that made my heart so incredibly happy and full.
After touring the house, we stood in the driveway and reflected what we had seen and how cute and perfect it was for us. Stuart and I had to move fast and make a decision if we wanted the house. So naturally we discussed it over some Chick-Fil-A nuggets and lemonade. We felt in our hearts and prayed that it would be the right choice to put an offer on it. Stuart wrote an amazing letter to the sellers (that actually touched my heart too, no wonder they sold it to us!) and explained who we are as a couple and how we could see ourselves raising a family in that home. The offer was sent over to the sellers a short while after our decision was made.
My mom called us on speaker phone that night to tell us the good news...they ACCEPTED OUR OFFER-within hours and with multiple offers already on the table! We all shouted and celebrated with joy and laughter. Even writing this right now, it makes me so happy and I can still feel what we both felt in that moment. We were officially homeowners. I don't doubt for a second that this was God's plan from the start. He watches out for us and it's very clear to us that He only wants the best for us. I am eternally grateful for this opportunity and next step in our life.
We are so excited to close on the house next week and get started in some renovations! I will be writing about the renovation process and also adding some before and after pictures. We are so overjoyed and feeling blessed beyond measure. Thank you for reading and stay tuned because the next few weeks will consist of knocking down walls and lots painting!
